Gastronomy jobs presented: the restaurant specialist apprenticeship
When you have a party at home, do you welcome and look after your guests with dedication? Do you simply enjoy taking care of other people's wishes? When you look at the menu and ask yourself "What should I eat?", do you immediately have five suggestions ready? Three times yes? Then we have the ultimate dream job for you: restaurant specialist.
What exactly does a restaurant specialist do?
This apprenticeship used to be called waiter or waitress. As a restaurant specialist, you set the tables, i.e. you lay clean tablecloths and napkins and place cutlery, plates and glasses. You will also be responsible for decorating the tables. You then welcome your guests and advise them on their choice of food and drinks. If someone has allergies or special food preferences, you will expertly recommend the appropriate dishes. This is where your sociability and caring nature come in handy. After all, you simply enjoy looking after your guests and making sure they feel comfortable.
Once you have taken the order, you serve the dishes. Sometimes you will also carry out various tasks such as filleting, flambéing or carving at the guest's table. In between, you will always politely inquire whether one of your guests has any outstanding requests. At the end, you issue the bill and collect the invoice amount. The tip you receive for your service is an important part of your salary.
As a restaurant specialist, you will also take table reservations and advance orders. You will be involved in putting together the menu and ensure that everything runs smoothly at large events such as wedding receptions or birthday parties. You are resilient and keep a cool head even in stressful situations. In our fun blog article "5 things that prove you're a waiter or waitress with heart and soul", you're sure to find one or two other qualities that describe you ...
You work closely with your colleagues in the kitchen and are in constant contact with them. After all, as a restaurant specialist, you need to know which dishes to recommend to your guests. Depending on the size of the establishment where you work, you can progress to different positions. We have put together an overview of the service brigade for you. Your working hours will often include evenings, public holidays and weekends. But that doesn't bother you, as you have more time for yourself and your errands during the week.
By the way, the former double apprenticeship "cook/waiter" is now known under the new name "gastronomy specialist".
