Watch out: Unwritten laws of the kitchen
There are clear rules in the kitchen. Most of them are well communicated, others are simply taken for granted. We have summarized 15 of these unwritten laws for you:
My knife...
... with the emphasis on the word "mine". Never use a colleague's knives without asking. They are the sanctuaries of chefs!
Clean up
This rule should not only be followed in commercial kitchens but also at home - always wash up after you have used something!
Be on time
Being late is not appropriate in the kitchen. It's always better to be 15 minutes early than late!
Rough sound
There are no kid gloves in the kitchen! There's a harsh tone here, and sometimes it gets loud. Don't take it personally, it's just the stress!
Mise en place
Every chef has their "mise en place", their things already prepared for the working day. Never take anything from someone else's mise en place. Apart from the fact that it's not fair, the colleague in question won't appreciate it at all.
Make it noticeable
To avoid accidents at work, make yourself known early on. For example, if you have to go behind a working colleague because that is where the access to the cold room is, announce yourself and let them know that you are there so that they are not startled.
Have a taste
Before you ask a colleague to try and taste something, always taste it yourself first.
Conquering the hangover mood
Did you go partying yesterday? Your head is buzzing? You have to get through it!
The motto in the kitchen is "play hard - work harder". If you can go out, you can work!
Learning to multitask
In the kitchen, double performance is required: the food has to leave the kitchen as quickly as possible and also look and taste perfect.
Showing responsibility
Once you've started something, it's yours.
Once you've put a pan of oil or a pan of water on the hob, it's your responsibility! Don't expect someone else to take care of your things.
Avoiding a shambles
Never take glass into the kitchen. Use plastic bottles when you're thirsty. The risk of something breaking and small shards ending up in your food is simply too great.
Keep order
Always put everything back where you found it. Things have to happen quickly in the kitchen, so you can't afford to spend hours looking for the oregano.
Be thrifty
Please always check first whether there is already an open spice packet before opening a new one.
Drink water
It's hot and stuffy in the kitchen and many people are working under high pressure! This makes it all the more important to stay hydrated. So: drink enough water!
Polite treatment
Always be nice to all your colleagues, from the cooks to the dishwashers. They are important for the smooth running of the kitchen!
